Chomp! Like a mechanical dinosaur, this ultra-high demolition excavator tore down the last part of the New Stacks building, where office space was located in the University of Virginia’s Alderman Library. Demolition will finish this month.
“Structural shoring has been added on the south and north sides of the library and bracing is set in the courtyards,” Senior Project Manager Kit Meyer said. “These structural interventions will stabilize the historic building during construction.” [See photo No. 10 in this recent photo essay.]
The central core of the historic library – which dates back to the Depression era – plus the east and west wings and the courtyards, will be retained for renovations, scheduled to begin this spring. By the summer, workers will begin laying concrete foundations for a state-of-the-art addition. The new and historic work will continue through 2022.
