July 17, 2008 — The deadline to register a University of Virginia team for the annual United Way Laurence E. Richardson Day of Caring is July 31.

Last year, a volunteer workforce of nearly 2,400 people from local businesses and organizations helped schools and charities through the annual community service event. 

Volunteers made a difference at 230 project sites in the Charlottesville, Albemarle, Fluvanna, Louisa and Nelson communities. Approximately 1,200 of the volunteers were U.Va. employees who worked on 131 projects.

Faculty and staff can join area volunteers during the 2008 Day of Caring on Sept. 17. They will serve the community in a wide variety of projects, ranging from clerical assistance to working with children or seniors, to painting, construction and landscaping.

U.Va. volunteers are encouraged to form teams and designate team leaders, who will choose a project for the group. The deadline to register a team is July 31, and project selection begins on Aug. 13. Teams should register at the United Way Web site, www.dayofcaring.info.
