The footbridge crossing Emmet Steet, connecting Newcomb Road South with Ridley Hall on the Grounds of the University of Virginia, will be taken down this weekend.

Emmet Street will be closed from 9 p.m. Thursday until 9 p.m. Sunday. Detours around the area will be marked.

A footbridge constructed as part of the Contemplative Commons project replaced the original bridge built in the 1970s. The new span over Emmet Street is compliant with the University’s accessibility standards and goals and is open to the public.

Contractors will take steps to protect Emmet Street from debris. Two large machines will remove the concrete and then the steel sections will be hauled away.
