Hours of sheeting rain deluged Charlottesville Saturday morning but the worst of the foul weather thankfully, perhaps miraculously, moved out of the area just ahead of Saturday’s Final Exercises.

“It’s a beautiful day,” Board of Visitors Rector Robert Hardie said from the stage to just under 4,000 students primed to realize their dreams of a University of Virginia degree.

The first half of the Class of 2024 – graduates of the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, the School of Education and Human Development, and the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy – trod down a soggy Lawn with nary a complaint, considering the squall that enveloped Grounds just hours earlier.

Dozens of Hoos filed past a pair of local television cameras next to Cocke Hall, all saying this moment had come in a flash.

“It has gone by so fast,” one said.

“In the blink of an eye,” added another.

The classmates that began their college courses on Zoom were urged to remain lifelong learners by the keynote speaker, psychology professor Daniel Willingham.

“It’s easy to be learner here,” he said. “Lifelong learning, outside of the University, will prove more challenging. But I am confident that your experiences here have provided the foundation you need to continue learning for a lifetime.”

On Sunday, students from UVA’s nine other schools will walk the Lawn. The forecast still has clouds in the area, but the rain chances are greatly diminished.
