Four-peat: Wahoos Are Queens of the Pool Once Again

The UVA women’s swimming and diving program celebrates after winning another national championship.

The University of Virginia women’s swimming and diving dynasty rolled along on Saturday in Athens, Georgia, as the Cavaliers won a fourth consecutive NCAA championship.

It’s a historic feat; UVA is now just the third program to take four straight national titles in the sport and the first since Stanford University won five in a row from 1992 to ’96.

The women’s swimming and diving program has now matched the Wahoo men’s soccer team (1991 to ‘94) as the only UVA programs to win four straight national titles.

“We’ve just got a great culture,” Virginia coach Todd DeSorbo said. “It started five, six, seven, eight years ago, and it’s just kind of built.”

The Hoos again crushed the competition, finishing with 527.5 points, well ahead of the University of Texas, which placed second with 441 points.

Virginia swimmers won seven individual events and four of the five relays. Junior Gretchen Walsh set American and NCAA records in the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard freestyle. She, along with teammates Jasmine Nocentini, Alex Walsh and Maxine Parker, set the NCAA record for the fastest time in the 400-yard medley relay.
