Governor Appoints Five New Members to UVA Board of Visitors

Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin announced late last week the appointments of five new members to the University of Virginia Board of Visitors. The new members will take their seats in August.

The new members:

  • Daniel M. Brody of Albemarle County, president of Health Data Services, and board member of the Brody Jewish Center, Hillel at the University of Virginia. Brody holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from UVA and a Master of Business Administration degree from the New York University Stern School of Business.
  • Marvin W. Gilliam Jr. of Bristol, owner of MAM Development. Gilliam previously served on UVA’s Board of Visitors from 2010-14 and currently serves on the College Board of UVA Wise. Gilliam also serves on the Virginia Athletics Foundation Board of Trustees. Gilliam holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from UVA.
  • Dr. David Okonkwo of Pittsburgh, professor of neurological surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. Okonkwo holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from UVA, and a medical degree and a doctorate in anatomy from Virginia Commonwealth University. 
  • David F. Webb of Virginia Beach, vice chairman of CBRE, a commercial real estate and investment company. Webb holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from UVA and a law degree from the University of Richmond School of Law.
  • Porter Wilkinson of Bethesda, Maryland, counselor and chief of staff to the Smithsonian Institution Board of Regents. Wilkinson holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a law degree from the UVA School of Law.

The appointments of Mark T. Bowles of Goochland, Elizabeth M. Cranwell of Vinton, Thomas A. DePasquale of Washington, Dr. Babur B. Lateef of Manassas, and James B. Murray Jr. of Keene concluded Sunday.

“Our outgoing board members have served UVA admirably, and we have made tremendous progress toward the goals laid out in the 2030 Strategic Plan,” University President Jim Ryan said. “I’m enormously grateful for their leadership and counsel, and look forward to working with our newest members on University priorities in the months and years ahead.”
