No matter the level of basketball, Malcolm Brogdon seems to be a magnet for major awards.
A star player at the University of Virginia, Brogdon on Thursday night was voted the National Basketball Association’s Sixth Man of the Year, earning the John Havlicek Trophy for his contributions this season to the Boston Celtics.

The award, named after a Celtics legend, is given annually to the league’s best-performing substitute player. Coming off the bench in all 67 of his appearances during the regular season, Brogdon averaged nearly 15 points and more than four rebounds and three assists for a Boston team that won its division and earned the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs, which began earlier this month. Brogdon made 44.4% of his 3-point attempts, fourth-best among all NBA players.

Now in his seventh NBA season, Brogdon is no stranger to high honors. In 2016-17 with the Milwaukee Bucks, he won Rookie of the Year. He’s now the second player in NBA history to win both Sixth Man of the Year and Rookie of the Year.

Brogdon was selected by Milwaukee in the second round of the 2016 NBA Draft following one of the most decorated careers in UVA history. The 6-foot-4 guard from Atlanta finished his time with the Cavaliers as the program’s ninth-leading career scorer. He was a three-time first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection, a two-time ACC Defensive Player of the Year award winner, a two-time All-American and the 2015-16 ACC Player of the Year – the first Wahoo with that distinction since Ralph Sampson three decades earlier.
