Media Advisory: Area Youth to Celebrate Their Successes Through U.Va.'s Day in the Life Program Today

April 19, 2012 — University of Virginia students and faculty will join students, teachers and administrators from Charlottesville City Schools and Albemarle County Public Schools today to celebrate academic successes promoted through U.Va.’s Day in the Life program, an academic mentoring program that matches U.Va. students with students in local schools.

The Community Celebration will begin at 5:30 p.m. at Buford Middle School cafeteria, and remarks are scheduled to start at 5:45 p.m.

The featured speaker will be Gertrude Ivory, associate superintendent for curriculum and instruction for the Charlottesville City Schools. Other speakers will include children and U.Va. students who will share their experiences with the Day in the Life program.

Day in the Life officials will also highlight the scope of the program as it marks its 10th year. Through the program, established in U.Va.'s Community Relations Office in 2002, U.Va. students provide mentoring and tutoring service to area youth at 25 community sites.

Media are invited to cover the event.  For more information contact Marcia D. Johnson, Day in the Life Program Coordinator, at 434-924-6855 or 434-825-5371.
