John F. Kerry will deliver his first major speech as U.S. Secretary of State on Wednesday, Feb. 20, at the University of Virginia. The speech will be delivered at 11 a.m. EST at Old Cabell Hall on the Grounds of the University.

All Media interested in covering the event must be credentialed

Credentials will be issued by the University of Virginia Office of University Communications.

Credential Application

To apply for credentials, RSVP by email only to pdc@virginia.edu. The deadline is 5 p.m. EST on Monday, Feb. 18.

The RSVP message must include:

  • Name, media organization, mailing address, email address and telephone number.
  • Type of credential requested (television, still photo, newspaper, etc.)
  • Television representatives must indicate if they plan to bring a satellite truck and specify the size of vehicle to assist in parking planning.

Space in Old Cabell Hall is limited and all credential applications may not be granted. Please RSVP as early as possible.

Credential Notification

The Office of University Communications will notify media of credentials by 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 19. The notice will include the number of credentials reserved and further information about picking up the credentials, guidelines and restrictions for covering the event and additional parking and technical details.

Credential Pickup

Media must pick up credentials at 400 Ray C. Hunt Drive, Fontaine Research Park, Charlottesville, Va. Valid media ID with photo required.

Credentials will be available for pickup on Tuesday, Feb. 19, between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. and on Wednesday, Feb. 20, between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m.

Pre-Event Setup

TV equipment must be dropped in Old Cabell Hall on Wednesday, Feb. 20, no later than 7 a.m., including television cameras, tripods, cables. Equipment drop is to facilitate initial security sweep. Media representatives may leave equipment and return later for setup.

Multboxes will be provided.

Old Cabell Hall will be open for TV equipment drop at 6 a.m. on Feb. 20.

Parking

Parking sites for satellite trucks will be provided. Details about satellite truck parking will be distributed along with notice of credential awards.

For other media, parking is limited and restricted on Grounds. Media are encouraged to park in the Central Grounds Parking Garage (credit cards NOT accepted) off Emmet Street.

Old Cabel Hall

All media must have valid event credentials and a photo ID with them at all time. Both will be necessary to access Old Cabell Hall. All persons entering the hall must pass through a security screening.

Seating for print media will be designated in the lower-level. Print media may carry shoulder bags or briefcases with laptops or tablet computers. Security will inspect items. Print media should be checked in at Old Cabell Hall and seated no later than 9:30 a.m.

Wi-Fi will be available.
Still photographers will be positioned on the same tier as TV cameras in Old Cabell Hall. Still photographers will be escorted to the pit area before the podium for photos before the start of the Secretary's speech. They will be moved to the tier with TV cameras and must stay in that station during the speech.

Media Filing Center

The media overflow and filing center is located in Rouss/Robertson Hall, adjacent to Old Cabell Hall. The room is #305. The filing center will have Internet access and power outlets. It will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
