William C. Battle, a former member of the University of Virginia Board of Visitors, died May 31 in Charlottesville. He was 87. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, June 11 at 4 p.m. at the University Chapel.

Throughout his career Battle was active in higher education in Virginia. He was appointed by former Virginia Gov. Mills Godwin to serve on the U.Va. Board of Visitors in 1976 and served for four years.
