In a Nail-Biter, Michael Bublé Saves This Hoo’s Day

“The Battle starts right now.”

With that declaration by “The Voice” host Carson Daly, University of Virginia third-year student Simone Marijic and her friend Iris Herrera began their duet, which, paradoxically, was also a faceoff.

Performing on Season 27 of NBC’s singing competition, the pair quietly leaned into their enchanting rendition of “Ceilings,” by Lizzy McAlpine.

“We were really excited to sing this song because we could relate to it and it’s beautiful,” Marijic said afterward. “We have very different voices, Iris and I. I think we have completely different textures and colors to our voices, but they really work together beautifully.”

Celebrity coaches John Legend, Kelsea Ballerini, Michael Bublé and Adam Levine all agreed.

“Loved the harmony,” enthused Bublé after their performance. “Both your voices sounded so great together.”

Now it was time for Ballerini, their coach, to choose which one of the singers would advance on the show.

“Simone, your voice to me is like a feather, because you have this really strong, meaty part to it,” Ballerini observed. “But then you have these edges that just fray off. It feels light and fluffy sometimes, and then it feels really strong and powerful sometimes.”

In the end, Ballerini chose Marijic’s new friend, Herrera.

“There were just so many thoughts in my head,” Marijic said on hearing the decision. “First it was that I was obviously sad and disappointed. I hadn’t felt like I’d given my all yet and really showed what I can do up until that point.”

She and her duet partner had grown close as they competed on the show and lived in the same hotel for several weeks. And they spent days rehearsing their performance.

“I felt like we both did a great job. And as a friend, I would have been happy either way. Going against a friend, you can’t really lose,” Marijic said.

The Steal

After Ballerini’s decision, the member of UVA’s a cappella group The Virginia Belles turned to leave the stage. “Then he hits his button,” she said of Bublé. “I just collapsed a little because I was so shocked. He seriously waited for the last minute to do it, too.”

Under show rules, coaches have an opportunity to “steal” someone and place them on their team. By pressing his button, that is what Bublé did.

“I was hoping that Simone would be available for the steal,” the singer said. “She obviously has a great work ethic. I think, literally, I have a dark horse on my team that could be the winner of ‘The Voice.’”

So, Marijic’s run on the show continues to the “Knockout” rounds, when coaches pit one singer against another, each singing a song, and then decide who advances from there. Her next appearance has not been announced.

Marijic has other news. She’s just released a single called “Until the Morning Dew Arrives.”

“It’s a very special song to me,” she said. “I actually wrote it while I was in the hotel on ‘The Voice.’”

The message of the song, she said, is to give yourself grace as you decide what to do with your life. “I wanted it to be my first release because I think the message was very fitting, and it’s about new beginnings,” she said.
