The U.S. Air Force ROTC detachment that includes University of Virginia students has been ranked in the top 10% of all similar cadet groups. UVA Provost Ian Baucom presented the award – a streamer attached to the unit’s flag, or guidon – in a Tuesday ceremony in the Rotunda Dome Room.

The Air Force also recognized the detachment for producing nearly 40 officers per year, four times the goal. The detachment also greatly surpassed its goals for graduating officers with technical degrees, the number of officers who become aviators and overall cadet quality. The detachment’s honor was based on five years of scores and data.

“This streamer documents the strong partnership and continued support of the institutions whose grounds we learn from and train from, and their support for airmen, cadets and families,” Air Force Col. Jason Bell, the detachment’s commander, said. “This streamer documents the tireless work of the instructors and staff who diligently mold leaders of character for our collective defense.”

Detachment 890 includes UVA students as well as students from James Madison University, Liberty University and Piedmont Virginia Community College. There are 145 Air Force ROTC detachments in the country.
