News In Brief: UVA Women Snag Intercollegiate Polo Championship

The University of Virginia Polo Club women’s team took the United States Polo Association’s Division I National Intercollegiate Championship on Sunday, defeating Texas A&M University, 14-13, on Alana Benz’s penalty shot with eight seconds remaining on the clock.

UVA fought a closely contested six-chukker match, with the lead seesawing back and forth, before an enthusiastic crowd in the indoor arena at the UVA Polo Club. Benz and teammates Mackenzie Craig and Lea Jih-Vieira rode the entire match.

In the men’s division, the University of North Texas scored a decisive victory over Southern Methodist University, 16-8, for the men’s Division I title. The host UVA men’s team fell in the early rounds of the weeklong tournament.
