Parents, read this before you help pack your Hoo to move in at UVA

If there’s one thing lots of University of Virginia parents agree on, it’s that students should only pack half as much clothing as they think they will need.

Michele Taylor, whose child is a rising fourth-year student, put it this way: “Charlottesville is definitely a warm climate until December.”

As first-year and transfer students prepare to move in beginning Aug. 21, UVA Today asked experienced parents for their top tips – from packing smart to parting with a heartfelt “see you soon” instead of “goodbye.”

“My best advice is to take the time you and your student need. No two families are alike,” said Kathy VanYe, whose son graduated from the School of Engineering and Applied Science in 2021 and earned a master’s degree in systems engineering in 2022. “Some parents may know that they will see their student sometime in the next few weeks, perhaps (at) a football game, perhaps a quick trip just because; others may not see their student until family weekend, which was our case; or even winter break.”

VanYe, a West Coast parent, said some students will want parents to be on their way as soon as possible. “Others will appreciate having their parents around a bit longer,” she added.

Here are some other hot takes from parents:

“An ‘emergency box’ – though my Hoo calls it their ‘my mom worries too much box’ – filled with items such as: thermometer, bandages, alcohol wipes, Tylenol, Advil, antacids, cold meds, Covid tests, Midol, Pedialyte packets, Benadryl, etc. According to my rising 3rd year (class of 27), the emergency box has come in handy many times over the years.”

“Hooks and clips for hats, backpacks and wet towels for the dorm room, or for girls, you can hang purses. Also, hangers that collapse for pants.”

— Nicole Emanuel Piette, Class of 2026 Parent

“A mallet so you can change the height of the bed if you need to.”

— Molly Bishop Shadel, Class of 2027 Parent

“Have plenty of the blue IKEA bags – makes it so easy to store off-season stuff under the bed, too. Remember, we live in 2025 and Amazon delivers next day, so don’t worry about things being perfect.”

— Michelle Kay Brown, Class of 2026 Parent

“An air mattress for when friends visit.”

— Gina Hilton Warner, Class of 2027 Parent

Finally, Michele Taylor, the “pack half what you think you will need” proponent, has this final bit of guidance.

“Label all IKEA/moving bags with dorm building/room number/name of student! The Greeters may swoop in and start carrying your stuff if it’s clearly labeled! Remember: UVA Greeters (current students who help during move-in weekend) are volunteers! Be nice to them!”
