January 16, 2009 — The internationally acclaimed Relâche Ensemble will present a concert of new music by University of Virginia composers Jan. 27 at 8 p.m. in Old Cabell Hall. The free performance will feature the premiere of works written for the ensemble by the University's doctoral music students.
The Relâche Ensemble is dedicated to the commissioning and presentation of new and innovative music. Since its establishment in 1977, the ensemble has performed over 550 concerts around the globe and boasts an impressive repertoire of more than 400 works.
Of their performance, the New York Times wrote, "Few contemporary music ensembles play with the dedication, high spirits and near-telepathic sense of teamwork that characterize Relâche."
Relâche is comprised of eight musicians who command everything from strings to woodwinds to percussion. The premiered works will stretch the limits of the instrumentation to create new and exciting sounds not heard at the average night at the symphony.
