In the 2018 fiscal year, the University of Virginia had an ambitious goal. Within five years, University leaders set out to have a year in which externally sponsored research funding surpassed $500 million.

In 2023, UVA and the Office of the Vice President of Research announced that the University surpassed that goal – by a lot. 

Now, they’re celebrating “The Road to $532 Million” with a multipart series featuring some of the people who helped make it happen.

UVA faculty received grants, both large and small, to try and tackle some of society’s most vexing issues. The following are just a few of the stories among the many collaborations that helped achieve the milestone.
