University honors ‘bridge builders’ for collaboration and service

A trio of UVA Health workers who helped a family navigate a child’s medical crisis and untangle a bevy of insurance complications is among several University of Virginia employees recognized with Hoos Building Bridges Awards for extraordinary collaboration across departments. The awards were presented at a reception in June.

UVA Health’s Dr. Kristen Atkins, Dr. Nathan Roberts and health ombudsman Mandy Eppard were lauded for providing “not only critical medical coordination, but also a deep sense of care and reassurance during a time of immense uncertainty.”

According to the nomination, the two doctors helped the family coordinate care and treatment so the child would miss as little school as possible. Eppard sorted out late-blooming insurance complications that threatened to derail the treatment.

“Their actions embody the very essence of the Hoos Building Bridges Award – bringing people together across roles and institutions to make a profound difference,” the University of Virginia’s Human Resources department wrote on the awards page.
