University to Test Emergency Alert System on Tuesday

August 27, 2010 —  The University will test the emergency notification system components on Tuesday, August 31, 2010 between 10:50 and 11:15 am.  The siren/public address, text messaging, e-mail, LED and LCD screens, Health System paging system and U.Va. Home Page will all be tested during this time frame.   When the test is completed, an "all clear" will be issued.
 
What You Can Expect
 
At approximately 10:50 am the test will begin.
 
·         If you are outside, you should hear a siren followed by a public address message:  "This is a test of the U.Va. emergency notification system. This is a test."  (To preview the sounds of the siren and all-clear horn, go to http://www.virginia.edu/emergency. [See Emergency Horns and Sirens on right hand side of page])
 
·         If you have signed up for U.Va. Alerts text messaging system and U.Va. Alerts e-mail, you should receive a test message.  If you have not signed up for U.Va. Alerts, go to https://www.virginia.edu/uvaalerts to do so.
 
·         If you have a U.Va. e-mail account, you should receive a test message.
 
·         If you are in a large classroom, you may hear a tone and see the message on an LED screen; if you are in a common area, you may see the message on an LCD screen.
 
·         If you carry a Simon In-house pager, you will receive a test message.
 
·         If you are on the University Home Page, you may see a message as well.
 
 
All Clear
 
At approximately 11:15 am, the "All Clear" will be issued.
 
·         The siren will sound with three blasts followed by the message: "This concludes the test of the UVa emergency notification system."
 
·         Text messaging, e-mail, Simon In-house pagers, LEDs, LCDs, and the Home Page will also display the "all clear" message.
