U.Va. Offers Trade Positions at Apprentice Job Fair

April 15, 2009 — The University of Virginia will hire six trade apprentices this year to begin an intensive four-year training.

An Apprentice Job Fair will be held April 22, from 9 to 10:30 a.m., at Alumni Hall, 211 Emmet Street. Apprentice program representatives, current apprentices and apprentice graduates will be available to answer questions about the program.

This is an information-gathering opportunity sponsored by U.Va. Facilities Management Department; no interviews will be conducted there. The six positions — two apiece for heating, ventilation and air conditioning technician, electrician and electronics technician — are open to internal and external applicants. A record number of applications are expected for this highly competitive four-year program.

Previous experience in the trade is not required, but successful applicants should have a commitment to learning the trade through on-the-job training and classroom instruction, a strong work ethic, the physical ability to perform the duties of the trade, the ability to be successful in the required academic assessments and defined coursework based on previous academic accomplishment and a high school diploma or GED and achieved 18 years of age by July 31, 2009.

Directions to the job fair are available at www.alumni.virginia.edu/about/directions.aspx.
Guests must park in the Central Grounds Parking Garage across from Alumni Hall at their own expense. Parking at Alumni Hall is not available for this event.

Job seekers do not need to attend the fair but may apply directly at https://jobs.virginia.edu before May 1 at 4:30 p.m.
