UVA Wise Receives Record-Setting Financial Gift

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise has received its largest single gift ever – $11.2 million – from The Bill Gatton Foundation, honoring Carol Martin “Bill” Gatton. The gift will bolster student scholarships and improve facilities at the campus in Southwest Virginia.

UVA’s Bicentennial Scholarship initiative will match a portion of The Bill Gatton Foundation’s gift for a total impact of $15.7 million, UVA Wise Chancellor Donna P. Henry said in a message to students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends.

“To say that this gift will be transformative doesn’t really capture the monumental impact that will have,” Henry said. “Every current and future student at the college will benefit from this gift.”

In life, Gatton, a successful businessman, investor and philanthropist, donated tens of millions of dollars to several academic institutions, including the University of Kentucky, where he graduated in 1954. An entrepreneur since grade school, Gatton found success in adult life in business, banking and real estate. Since his death in 2022, his foundation has carried on his philanthropy.

The gift to UVA Wise will have far-reaching effects, Henry said. It will create six endowed funds and will:

  • Support the Chancellor’s Greatest Needs Fund, which includes the naming of the C.M. Gatton Hospitality Suite and the C.M. “Bill” Gatton Chancellor’s Seating Box in the David J. Prior Center.
  • Support the naming of the Bill Gatton Department of Nursing, the Bill Gatton Department of Technology Management and Data Analytics and, once completed, the Bill Gatton Technology and Data Analytics Hall.
  • Create the Bill Gatton Scholars program, including three new scholarship funds in academics, athletics and technology and data analytics.
  • Create the Rachel Clay-Keohane Mathematics Fund to honor the UVA Wise Athletics Hall of Fame basketball player and current head coach of the UVA Wise women’s basketball team who is also a mathematics professor.
  • Name and support the Bill Gatton Softball Field.

The Bill Gatton Foundation is in Bristol, Tennessee, where Gatton spent the last 55 years of his life and about 400 miles from where Gatton grew up on a farm in Bremen, Kentucky. The foundation serves educational, medical and community causes in Kentucky, Southwest Virginia and Upper East Tennessee.
