UVA’s Stephen Mull To Lead State Department’s Presidential Transition

The U.S. State Department has selected University of Virginia Vice Provost for Global Affairs Stephen D. Mull to coordinate the department’s transition between the administrations of President Joe Biden and President-elect Donald Trump.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken made the announcement Thursday. In September, Blinken asked Mull to lead the transition, regardless of which candidate won. Mull began that work Oct. 28.

Before joining UVA, Mull served in several national security positions, including as the ambassador to Lithuania and Poland.

“I’m honored to return temporarily to the State Department with UVA’s strong support to help guide what I hope will be a smooth transition focused on protecting vital U.S. interests during the change in administration,” Mull said.

UVA Provost Ian Baucom said Mull’s selection for this task shows the high regard in which he is held at both the State Department and UVA.

“The State Department’s selection of Stephen Mull for this important assignment confirms what those who work with him here at UVA already know – he is an accomplished and dedicated leader who is always ready to serve,” Baucom said. “In a complex and uncertain time for our globe, we are proud to see such an important member of our leadership team step forward to help the State Department transition from this administration to the next.”

Mull’s assignment is expected to last through January.
