September 25, 2009 — Meredith Jung-En Woo, the Buckner W. Clay Dean of Arts & Sciences at the University of Virginia, will speak at the University's annual Fall Convocation, to be held Oct. 16 at 2 p.m., in the John Paul Jones Arena.
The ceremony includes the awarding of Intermediate Honors to the top 20 percent of students who have completed at least 60 hours of course work at the University in their first two years. Also, two members of the University community will receive the Thomas Jefferson Award, U.Va.'s highest honor. The convocation traditionally kicks off Family Weekend.
"I consider it a great honor to be this year's speaker," Woo said. "Academic strength is the foundation on which we have built the reputation of the College and the University, so it is especially fitting that we recognize so many of our strongest students for their academic achievements in this ceremony. I feel privileged to help them celebrate such an important educational milestone."
Woo, who became dean in 2008, is an expert in East Asian politics and the international political economy. She came to U.Va. from the University of Michigan, where she had been associate dean for social sciences at the College of Literature, Science and the Arts. She was also a political science professor at Michigan and taught at Northwestern University.
She has worked as a consultant for the World Bank, the United States Trade Representative, the Asian Development Bank Institute, the Asia Foundation and the MacArthur Foundation. President Bill Clinton appointed her to the Presidential Commission on U.S.-Pacific Trade and Investment Policy.
Educated in Korea and Japan through high school, Woo received her bachelor's degree at Bowdoin College, and master's degrees in international affairs and Latin American studies and a doctorate in political science from Columbia University.
She has written or edited several books. Her most recent is "Neoliberalism and Reform in East Asia." Her other books include "Past as Prelude: History in the Making of the New World Order" and "Race to the Swift: State and Finance in Korean Industrialization."
