U.Va. Art Museum's 'Writer's Eye 2010' Competition Begins Sept. 13

August 30, 2010 — The University of Virginia Art Museum announces Writer's Eye 2010, its 24th annual literary competition based on artworks selected from the museum's permanent collection and visiting exhibitions. The competition will be judged in the categories of prose and poetry for grades three through five, six through eight, nine through 12 and university student/adult. Entrants view the Writer's Eye art selections and then write original poetry or prose inspired by one of those works.

Writer's Eye group tours at the museum begin Sept. 13, and contest entries must be submitted by Nov. 12. Winners will be announced in January, and the works of first-, second- and third-place winners will be published in a full-color anthology. An awards ceremony will be held on March 20 at Campbell Hall with a reception to follow at the museum.

Art selections for Writer's Eye 2010 will be drawn from the museum's permanent collection, as well as from two current exhibitions: "Man Ray, African Art and the Modernist Lens" and "African Art: Beyond the Modernist Lens."

Jack Trammel and Charlotte Matthews, well-known writers from Louisa and Albemarle counties, respectively, will be this year's judges for the high school and university student/adult categories. Student entries from grades three through eight will be judged by teachers and writers from the community.

Entry forms and information about the competition are on the museum's website. The artwork selections will be posted on Sept. 13.

Docent-led group tours designed especially for school classes and other community groups are available by appointment Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. as well as at selected times on weekends. Self-guided tours of the Writer's Eye selections may be taken during the museum's public hours Tuesday through Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. All group visits must be scheduled through the museum's education department.
