April 6, 2010 — The U.Va Art Museum celebrates spring with the Fourth Annual Flower Creations Family Art JAM: Flower Sculpture Inspired by Art on April 18. In this popular children's program, youngsters ages 5 to 12 and their adult companions visit the museum for an afternoon of fun, hands-on creativity and make-and-take art.
This Family Art JAM is timed to coincide with the annual "Flowers Interpret Art" event in the museum on April 20. Floral interpretation of artworks is a growing pastime in the United States, with an especially strong following in this region where garden clubs are a popular activity. Artworks are studied for their formal elements, and flowers are chosen and placed in an arrangement to reflect the line, color and movement of the artwork.
Pieces will be selected from the museum's exhibit "Highlights from the Collection: From Rodin to Warhol," along with works of aboriginal art on loan from the Kluge-Ruhe Collection. Guided by Sarah West, the museum's education department intern, children will explore the line, shape, light, color and movement in pieces from the exhibition. They will then choose their favorite artwork and use fresh flowers to create a floral interpretation of their own.
The Family Art JAM for 5- to 7-year-olds will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Seven- to 12-year-olds are invited to attend from 3 to 5 p.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
The Family Art JAMs are available to museum members for $10 for one adult with one or two children, and to nonmembers for $20. Additional children or adults can attend for $3 each. Museum membership is available for $75 for families and $40 for seniors and U.Va. faculty and staff. Information on programs and membership levels is available at the museum's Web site.
To register for the Family Art JAM, call 434-243-2050 or e-mail museumoutreach@virginia.edu. The museum is located at 155 Rugby Road, a short walk from the Rotunda, across the street from Madison Bowl.
