Nov. 14, 2006 -- Tomorrow, University of Virginia employees and student workers will investigate how much recyclable material is being thrown out in the University’s trash.
While U.Va. has dramatically increased the amount of material it recycles, Bruce C. “Sonny” Beale, recycling program superintendent, said there is always room for improvement.
Between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., student recycling workers will empty the contents of two dumpsters on the ground in front of Old Cabell Hall, separating the discarded items by category to determine what percentage of the trash could have been recycled. By holding the event on the Lawn, recycling officials hope to educate members of the University community that more recycling can be done.
Since 1994, the U.Va. award-winning recycling and waste management program has garnered 13 awards of excellence, including the 2005 Virginia Recycling Association Outstanding University Recycling Program, the 2004 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Waste Wise Program championship and the 2003 EPA Waste Wise Program championship.
