Oct. 25, 2006 – As part of its daylong focus on the 2006 midterm elections, MSNBC broadcast “Tucker,” hosted by Tucker Carlson, live from the steps of the Rotunda on Tuesday, Oct. 24.
During the program, Carlson interviewed University of Virginia politics professor Larry Sabato on gubernatorial races in Ohio, New York, Colorado and other states. Carlson also spoke with Dave “Mudcat” Saunders, a political strategist who has worked for the campaigns of former Gov. Mark Warner and Democratic Senate hopeful Jim Webb.
A crowd of U.Va. students holding posters supporting candidates for U.S. Senate and House of Representatives formed a lively backdrop for the open-air broadcast, which ran from 6 to 7 p.m.
A producer for MSNBC cited three reasons why U.Va. was chosen as the site for the live broadcast: the Virginia Senate race between incumbent George Allen and Webb remains one of the most hotly contested in the nation; Sabato, the director of the Center for Politics, is recognized throughout the country as one of the leading experts on electoral politics; and “the campus is so damn beautiful.”
Other MSNBC correspondents provided live coverage throughout the day from locations in Connecticut, Tennessee, Ohio, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Minnesota.
