(Editorial) Born in Greensboro, N.C., Judge Bill Sweeney and his family moved to Lynchburg, where he graduated from E.C. Glass High School. He attended the Virginia Military Institute, receiving his degree in 1949. Service in the Korean War interrupted his time at the University of Virginia Law School. Returning to the Hill City, he joined the firm of Caskie, Frost, Davidson and Watts. He presided over the cases of Elizabeth Haysom and her boyfriend Jens Soering, both honors students at the University of Virginia, who were charged in the killings of her parents. Sweeney died Sunday.
