The University of Virginia on Tuesday formalized the 12-member committee that will seek, interview and recommend internal and external candidates for the position of executive vice president and provost, UVA’s top academic officer.
After UVA President Scott Beardsley appointed UVA Northern Virginia Dean and CEO Gregory Fairchild as committee chair in July, they worked together to add nine additional members. Consistent with past practice, the UVA Board of Visitors also appointed two of its members.
“The committee includes a broad sampling of community members, ranging from students to alumni, faculty and the Board of Visitors, professors from across schools and levels, and key administrative leaders,” Fairchild said. “All of these voices are important to our search process, as all are key stakeholders who influence and are influenced by our provost.”
In addition to Fairchild, here are the committee’s other members:
- Michael Bisceglia, member, Board of Visitors
- Maïté Brandt-Pearce, vice provost for faculty affairs
- Carlos Brown, rector, Board of Visitors
- Jennifer “J.J.” Wagner Davis, executive vice president and chief operating officer
- Dr. Kirsten Greene, chair of the UVA Department of Urology and Paul Mellon Professor
- Michael Kennedy, professor of education
- Mark Luellen, senior vice president for external relations
- Mariam Parray, fourth-year student and Jefferson Scholar and Echols Scholar
- Vivian Riefberg, Walentas Jefferson Scholars Foundation Professorship Chair
- Dr. Mitch Rosner, UVA Health CEO and executive vice president for health affairs
- Brad Wilcox, University Professor, Department of Sociology
During the group’s first meeting Tuesday, Beardsley thanked the members for their service and charged them with identifying an outstanding, visionary provost to join the University as its leadership kicks off a new strategic planning process to chart a path for the future. The committee's work will be confidential.
