Driving from Tazewell to Charlottesville takes a little less than four hours and two highway changes. Emilee Lacy’s journey from her Southwest Virginia hometown to the University of Virginia took a far more circuitous route, taking her through a teenage engagement to a man who would be arrested for sex crimes, a Harvard University degree and a deep depression.
Lacy, who writes under the name Emilee Hackney, is now an assistant administrator in the University’s English department. Her debut memoir, “All That’s Unseen,” describes her upbringing in Appalachia, her adolescent involvement in a charismatic evangelical church, and her experiences as a Southern transfer student out of her depth in the Ivy League. It has received rave reviews in The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times.
Lacy, now 29, said her younger self could not have imagined her life now.
