June 18, 2008 — Dr. Marcus Martin, immediate past chairman of the University of Virginia's Department of Emergency Medicine, is the first recipient of an award the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine has created in his honor. He received the Marcus L. Martin Leadership Award May 30 at the society's annual meeting in Washington, D.C.

Martin, now U.Va. associate vice president for diversity and equity, initiated a diversity task force when he was president of the society in 2001. It led to the formation of a permanent Diversity Interest Group in the organization.
