Archaeological, Utilities Excavation in Colonnade Alley to Start Monday

December 2, 2010 — Colonnade Alley, west of the Lawn at the University of Virginia, will undergo archaeological excavation starting Monday.

The archaeological work is being done in anticipation of excavation to relocate utility lines from the basement of Pavilion IX. Rivanna Archaeological Services will monitor the process and conduct a formal excavation roughly within the perimeter of the herb garden between Pavilion IX and the McGuffey Cottage.

Construction fencing will be erected at the Colonnade Alley parking court on Friday, closing off the parking spaces behind the pavilion, and workers will remove the asphalt from the parking lot starting Monday. The formal archaeological excavation beside McGuffey Cottage will begin Monday and continue until Dec. 17. The utility installation will start on Dec. 20 and continue through the winter break.

Pedestrian access from Colonnade Alley to the Lawn will be maintained, as will access to the women's bathroom for Lawn residents. Detour signs will be posted.
