Author of "The Osama bin Laden I know" to speak Friday

CNN terrorism expert Peter Bergen, author of the 2006 book, "The Osama bin Laden I Know," will speak at 11 a.m. Sept. 12 at the University of Virginia. The topic of his presentation: "Face to Face with Osama bin Laden."

His appearance is being sponsored by the Miller Center of Public Affairs. The talk will be at the center, 2201 Old Ivy Road in Charlottesville.

In the book, Bergen describes bin Laden's transition from son of a wealthy businessman to worldwide symbol of terror. Bergen is also the author of "Holy War: Inside the World of Osama bin Laden, which was published shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on New York and Washington, D.C. Both books became documentaries for National Geographic and CNN.

He is a Schwartz senior fellow at the New America Foundation in Washington, D.C., an adjunct lecturer at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, and a research fellow at New York University's Center on Law and Security.

Bergen has written for a variety of publications, including the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal. In the Sept. 24 issue of New Republic, Bergen outlines steps America needs to take to improve security in Afghanistan.
