Among the many places he visited in his 99 years, the United Kingdom’s Prince Philip accompanied his wife Queen Elizabeth II to the University of Virginia and Monticello in July 1976.
In these photos by Ed Roseberry, Prince Philip, who died Friday at Windsor Castle, is shown among a large crowd at Monticello and striding down the Lawn at UVA. The visit was part of the royal couple’s U.S. tour commemorating America’s bicentennial.
An estimated 18,000 people gathered on the Lawn as Prince Philip and the queen made the same walk that UVA graduates make annually. A much smaller group also filled the Rotunda Dome Room, where Virginia Gov. Mills E. Godwin hosted a luncheon for the queen.
Buckingham Palace announced the Duke of Edinburgh’s death on Friday. He was married to the queen for 73 years, making him the longest-serving consort in British history.
