The Bigger Picture: Tropical Storm’s Rains Create Temporary Reflection of Rotunda

Now reclassified as post-tropical cyclone bound for Canada, former Hurricane Isaias’s rain bands reached deep into Central Virginia late Monday and early Tuesday morning, leaving temporary pools of rain water on the University of Virginia’s Lawn.

According to the weather station at UVA’s Leander McCormick Observatory, a combined 2.1 inches of rain fell Monday and Tuesday, though the highest wind gust peaked at just 10 mph.

UVA photographer Sanjay Suchak captured this image Monday evening, before the waters drained. Taken from the vantage point of the East Lawn rooms, UVA’s iconic Rotunda had a temporary twin reflected in Isaias’s leavings.
