Historic Mem Gym Closed for Major Interior Renovations

A major interior renovation of century-old Memorial Gymnasium will close the historic structure until the fall of 2026, University of Virginia officials announced Friday.

The work that began in January will include HVAC and utility upgrades, installation of new fire suppression systems, classroom renovations, enhancements of educational and recreational spaces, and accessibility accommodations, including new ADA-compliant restrooms.

Built in 1924, Memorial Gymnasium – or “Mem Gym” to students – needs upgrades to its interior to meet current safety, accessibility and operational standards. Exterior renovations are also in progress.

“We realize that the renovations will reduce the amount of indoor recreational space that people can reserve on Grounds,” Erica Perkins, executive director of UVA Recreation, said. “We appreciate the community’s patience and understanding as we complete important improvements to this 100-year-old facility.”

The UVA volleyball team will practice and compete at the North Grounds Recreation Center during the Mem Gym renovations. Other programs, clubs, classes and activities that frequently use Mem Gym – including the Cavalier wrestling team, which also practices and competes there – are being accommodated in other facilities across Grounds. UVA Recreation is offering expanded hours at Slaughter Recreation Center to meet the needs of additional recreation space requests. The Aquatic & Fitness Center will be available on its normal operating schedule.

The outdoor basketball, sand volleyball, pickleball and tennis courts around Mem Gym, and Carr’s Hill Field all will remain open for use. Equipment for use on outdoor courts will be available for lending at the Lady Astor Tennis Pavilion.
