It was a tough weekend to be a UVA sports opponent

It was quite a weekend for the University of Virginia athletics program as Cavaliers of all kinds pulled off impressive wins, including a resounding takedown of a No. 1-ranked team.

Let’s recap the action.

Men’s soccer

The UVA men’s soccer team didn’t just knock off No. 1 Wake Forest University on Friday, it did so in a dominating fashion.

Coach George Gelnovatch’s Wahoos jumped out to a 5-0 lead at Klöckner Stadium en route to a 6-3 thumping of the Demon Deacons.

The win was Virginia’s first over a top-ranked opponent since 2019 and its largest margin of victory over a No. 1 team.

Women’s soccer

Speaking of No. 1 teams, UVA women’s soccer didn’t disappoint in its first game this season as the top-ranked squad in the sport.

The Cavaliers (8-0-1) remained undefeated with a 3-0 blanking of Syracuse University in central New York.

UVA has shut out seven of its nine opponents this season.

Field hockey

No matter the sport, UVA seemed to be at home in Syracuse over the weekend.

The field hockey Cavaliers also topped the fourth-ranked Orange on their home field, doing so Sunday with a 2-1 win, marking their second victory over a Top 15 opponent in three days.

Virginia, which entered the weekend ranked third in the national poll, beat No. 13 Boston College, 2-0, on Friday in Charlottesville.

A penalty shot from Mia Abello in the final minute of regulation delivered the Hoos (6-0) their Sunday win.

Football

With a highly anticipated matchup with Florida State University looming, the football Cavaliers showed no signs of looking ahead during their 48-20 drumming of Stanford University in the ACC opener on Saturday night in Scott Stadium.

UVA, thanks to 590 yards of offense, improved to 3-1 on the season. Senior receiver Trell Harris had three touchdown catches – all within the first 12 minutes of the game.

The Hoos host No. 8 Florida State on Friday.

Volleyball

The UVA volleyball team picked up a pair of wins on a three-day trip to Columbus, Ohio.

On Friday, the Cavaliers knocked off Ohio State University in five sets before sweeping Troy University in three sets on Sunday.
