May 28, 2010 — Kristina Asay's approach to being a patient care assistant in the University of Virginia Medical Center's acute pediatrics area is not only family-centered, but also genuine.

One of nine children, Asay's playful interactions with young patients are natural and frequent, her co-workers said in nominating her for a Leonard W. Sandridge Outstanding Contribution Award.

Although this Philippine native enjoys bringing fun into the workplace, she is also dedicated to her work.

"She is always working to make the unit a better place," wrote one nominator. "Her initiative is inspiring."
