McIntire Department of Art presents "PART I: An Exchange Exhibition Between Two Art Departments"

January 15, 2008 — In anticipation of a new student exchange program between the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the University of Virginia's McIntire Department of Art, which starts in fall 2008, the McIntire Department of Art presents the exhibition, “PART I: An Exchange Exhibition Between Two Art Departments, The Chinese University of Hong Kong and The University of Virginia,” from Jan. 30 through Feb. 29 at its Off Grounds Gallery on the corner of Main and Ridge streets. Hours are Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4 to 6 p.m., Fridays from 3 to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 1 to 5 p.m. An opening reception will be on "First Friday," Feb. 1, from 5 to 7 p.m.

The artists participating in this exchange exhibition include full-time faculty members, six part-time teachers and two M.F.A. candidates in the Department of Fine Arts at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Among the 20 or so works that will be on exhibit are Chinese ink paintings, calligraphy, seal carvings, watercolors, oil and acrylic paintings, mixed-media works and sculptures. This selection is a fairly representative illustration of the art of contemporary Chinese culture, revealing new developments and trends in contemporary art education and art practices in the international Asian city of Hong Kong.

This event is the first part of a two-part exchange exhibition.  PART II of the exchange will entail the studio art faculty of U.Va.’s McIntire Department of Art sending work to The Chinese University of Hong Kong for its annual exhibition in May.

These exhibitions, Parts I and II, serve to jump-start a new student exchange program between the two departments, where it is anticipated that as many as two students per semester will participate.

China University art professor Zhou Jin and his graduate student, Tang Kwok Hin, will visit U.Va. during the 'Part I Exhibition' at Off Grounds Gallery. Zhou will demonstrate for U.Va. students his Chinese painting techniques and Tang will give a PowerPoint talk on the work done by other graduate art students in Hong Kong.

This exhibition is sponsored by the McIntire Department of Art, Arts$ and the University of Virginia Arts Council.
