Richard A. Murphy, 74, a retired professor in the University of Virginia’s School of Medicine, died March 9 in Charlottesville.

Professor emeritus of the Department of Molecular Physiology and Biological Physics, Murphy joined the U.Va. faculty in 1968 and became a full professor of physiology in 1977. He was internationally known and respected for his work on the fundamental properties of smooth muscle in blood vessels and the effects on blood pressure regulation. He served on many academic and review committees for the University over the years and retired in 2004.

A memorial service will be planned at a later date.
