In Memoriam: Tom Galyean

June 15, 2012 — Thomas Wayne Galyean II, director of corporate and foundation relations at the University of Virginia's College at Wise, died June 6 in Wise. He was 39.

Galyean, formerly of Snyder, Texas, worked for a decade in higher education development. Before joining U.Va.'s College at Wise, he was assistant director for development at athe University of Texas Harry Ransom Center. As the first development officer for the University of Texas Library System, he secured the largest gift in the organization's history.

He also served as the senior director of corporate and foundation relations at Stony Brook University in New York. Galyean was a member of Pi Alpha Alpha, National Honors Society for Public Affairs and Administration, and he served on the Wise County Chamber of Commerce in 2011. President of the Wise Business Association, Galyean was also a member of the fundraising committee of the Norton Community Hospital Foundation Board.

"This is indeed a terrible blow to all of us who knew Tom and valued his dedicated professionalism, his vibrant work ethic, his sincere enthusiasm for the College at Wise and his humble collegial personality," said Nicholas Duke, U.Va.'s director of corporate and foundation relations.
