Thomas Lewis Spitzer, who retired from the University of Virginia Facilities Management in February 2003, died Feb. 8 in Barboursville. He was 76.

During his 23 years at U.Va., he became the senior mason on Grounds and worked to preserve University landmarks, such as the serpentine walls and herringbone brick walks.
