In Memoriam: Walter Vieweg

Dr. Walter Victor Vieweg, a former psychiatrist in the University of Virginia School of Medicine, died Oct. 7 in Richmond. He was 79.

Vieweg joined the U.Va. faculty after retiring from the Navy in 1981, when he was head of cardiology at the U.S. Naval Hospital in San Diego.

At U.Va., Vieweg was a member of the psychiatry department and director of research from 1984 until 1991. He then went to Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center until 2005. He entered the private practice of psychiatry and was active until his death.

Vieweg specialized in the interface of psychiatry and internal medicine. His principal areas of interest were cardiac and metabolic complications of psychotropic drugs. A past president of the Psychiatric Society of Virginia, he was widely published and presented at numerous scientific meetings.
