The National Academy of Inventors ranked the University of Virginia No. 43 in its list of the top 100 universities granted the most common form of United States patents during 2022.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office issued 52 utility patents – also known as “patents for invention” – to UVA-affiliated inventors that year. The full top 100 list can be viewed here; the 10-campus University of California system led the nation with 570 patents granted.

The academy’s Top 100 lists are created using calendar-year data provided by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Top 100 placement includes all named assignees listed on the patent.

According to the National Academy of Inventors press release, “This new list was created to highlight and celebrate American innovation and to showcase the universities that play a large role in advancing the innovation ecosystem within the U.S. and beyond.”
