Photos: Blink and You Might Miss the Pratt Gingko’s Seasonal Quick-Change Act

Every fall, long after the Grounds’ other trees have flaunted their fiery reds and shimmering golds before casting their leaves to the breeze, the University of Virginia’s iconic Pratt Ginkgo holds fast to its fan-shaped foliage of pistachio green.

But as November wanes and December approaches, the Pratt Ginkgo explodes like a firework shell into a dazzling sphere of luminous golden-yellow. The spectacle is fleeting; just as suddenly, the tree then shivers off its canary-colored canopy.

University Communications photographer Matt Riley captured this year’s Pratt Ginkgo autumn transition.
