Summer Chamber Music Workshop to Be Held in June

March 20, 2007 -- Join the U.Va. faculty this summer in an intensive five-day chamber music workshop, "Beyond the Notes...and Back Again," from June 19-23. The application deadline is April 1. The focus will be on developing musicianship skills which go "beyond the notes" — the listening, rhythmic, analytical and diplomatic skills that go into the making of quality chamber music. Students will study appropriately-assigned repertoire in detail with faculty members in small ensembles, culminating with performances in Old Cabell Hall.

The program will meet on the grounds of the University of Virginia from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 19 through Friday, June 22; and on Saturday, June 23 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Each day will be divided into chamber ensemble coachings and rehearsals, masterclasses, and full chamber orchestra rehearsals. A few advanced pianists will be selected to participate in chamber ensembles. There is a non-refundable application fee of $25, and the program fee is $425. Private lessons are available for all participants for an additional fee at a rate of $45 per hour.

The workshop is open to college and high school students, advanced middle school students, and adult amateurs. String woodwind, brass and piano students will be accepted. A minimum of three years of individual instrumental study and at least one year of orchestral/ensemble experience is expected of all applicants. Teacher recommendation is required, and an audition tape for placement purposes may be requested. Lunch will be provided Tuesday through Saturday, and parking is available for an additional fee.
