July 31, 2007 -- University of Virginia Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Leonard W. Sandridge today announced that Susan A. Carkeek, chief human resources officer at U.Va. since Nov. 1, 2006, has been named vice president and chief human resources officer, effective Aug. 1.

The title change accompanies a change in reporting structure. Carkeek will report to President John T. Casteen III through Sandridge. The position had reported to the vice president and chief financial officer.

“The change in title and reporting line represent the importance we place on our most valuable resource — our people,” said Sandridge. “Susan has provided leadership and a steady hand during a time of transition in the department. She exhibits a commitment to exceptional service and an advocacy for our staff that is making a difference.”

As chief human resources officer, Carkeek has overall responsibility for all human resources functions for the academic division of the University as well as oversight responsibility for the University’s College at Wise and the Medical Center benefits program.

Carkeek has overseen a number of new programs across the University since her arrival, including this week’s launch of Jobs@UVa, an online application system. Among the others are the Essential WorkSkills Program for entry-level employees, an enhanced Service Award Program, a University-wide survey on restructuring and a revised and expanded new employee orientation.

“I want to thank the administration for recognizing how valuable human resources can be in helping the University move forward,” Carkeek said. “This change is also a testament to the wonderful team of HR professionals we have here at U.Va. We have made great strides these past few months because we are working together. I am honored to work with such a great team of people and I look forward to more good things in the years ahead.”

Carkeek joined U.Va. last fall with more than 30 years of experience in higher education human resources management. She had been vice president of human resources at the University of New Mexico for 10 years; before UNM, she served for eight years as director of personnel services at the University of Nevada, Reno, and six years as personnel officer at the University of Montana.

Carkeek has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and a master of business administration from the University of Montana. She is certified as a Senior Professional in Human Resources by the Society for Human Resource Management.

While she was at UNM, her department was named the most innovative human resources department in the state. Carkeek was honored in 1994 with the Nevada Woman of Achievement award for outstanding achievement in career and community service; in 1993 with the Outstanding Faculty Award from the University and Community College System of Nevada; and, also in 1993, the Roadrunner Award for significant contributions to the profession from the Southwest Region of the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources.
