University of Virginia, Kellogg Team to Donate to Food Bank

January 20, 2011 — University of Virginia Dining Services is teaming with Kellogg's Food Away From Home program to fight hunger.

For one month, Kellogg's Food Away From Home will donate a bowl of cereal to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank for every bowl of Kellogg's cereal U.Va. students consume in the residential dining halls on Grounds. Kellogg expects to donate about 6,400 servings of cereal.

The drive will start at noon on Jan. 26 at the Observatory Hill Dining Hall with students; administrators; chefs; Lawrence M. Zippin, the chief executive officer of the Blue Ridge Food Bank; and Kellogg representatives. U.Va. is the first university in the country to participate in this program.

"U.Va. students are socially responsibility-minded and motivated by community involvement," Brent Beringer, director of U.Va. Dining, said. "Kellogg is a great partner in this effort, offering us the tools we need to effectively execute this promotion and illustrate how dedicated we are to community and University philanthropy."

According to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, one person in 10 in the Blue Ridge area does not know where the next meal will come from, and thousands in area communities make tough decisions between eating and paying for other basic needs.

"Every little bit helps and surely this donation by Kellogg and the efforts of the University of Virginia students will go a long way for people in need," Zippin said. "Many of those who receive food from our food banks are the most vulnerable in our communities – children, the elderly, struggling families, the working poor, people with disabilities and the homeless. They are hungry because they've run out of good options. The Kellogg donation will help them stretch what they already have even further."

Tim Knowlton, Kellogg vice president for corporate social responsibility, said the company donates $20 million of products annually. "Our partnership with the University of Virginia and the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank is an example of our continued commitment to helping those challenged in these economic times," he said.
