The University of Virginia’s schools of Law and Medicine have earned top national rankings in U.S. News & World Report’s delayed rankings of graduate schools, released Thursday.
In the publication’s 2023-24 Best Graduate Schools guide, the organization again ranked UVA’s School of Law the No. 1 public school in the nation. UVA Law was ranked eighth overall in a tie with the law school at Columbia University. The rankings come even though the law school, along with many others, did not provide U.S. News with data for this ranking cycle, saying the rankings were unreliable and not fully representative of the educational experience.
UVA’s School of Medicine ranks 11th among public schools of medicine for research.
“Research that leads to medical breakthroughs – such as focused ultrasound and the artificial pancreas – is vital to our mission of transforming health and inspiring hope for all Virginians and beyond,” said Dr. Melina R. Kibbe, dean of the School of Medicine. “I look forward to our work to build on these strengths in the years ahead to achieve our goal of being the nation’s best public academic health system.”
In December, Law Dean Risa Goluboff wrote an open letter to prospective law students explaining why UVA decided to abstain from participating in the rankings.
Goluboff also provided a link to a new information page that contains information on median LSAT scores, student-to-faculty ratios and employment data for recent graduates.
Following the boycott by many schools, U.S. News delayed the final release of its rankings of law and medical schools.
In April, the organization ranked the UVA School of Education and Human Development the nation’s No. 16 graduate school in education, tied with the University of Texas at Austin. The school rose one spot from last year, making it the top school in Virginia.
The school’s education psychology program rose four spots to No. 13; student counseling rose three spots to No. 16; and the special education program is No. 5.
U.S. News also gave high marks to the School of Nursing. It ranked the master’s program No. 14. It’s Doctor of Nursing program is ranked No. 28.
