U.Va. Art Museum Hosts Final Friday Reception Oct. 29

October 14, 2010

October 14, 2010 — The University of Virginia Art Museum will host a Final Friday reception Oct. 29 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Guests will enjoy refreshments and the newly opened exhibition, "From Classic to Romantic: British Art in an Age of Transition."

"From Classic to Romantic" examines the enormous cultural and artistic changes that occurred in the latter part of the 18th century and the first years of the 19th century. Moving from the culmination of neoclassicism to the advent of romanticism, art from this period reveals powerful conflicts or collaborations between reason and emotion, order and chaos, the subjective and objective. This collaborative exhibition draws works from the museum's own collection, U.Va.'s Special Collections, private collections and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

Also on view are "African Art: Beyond the Modernist Lens" in the Pine Gallery and new acquisitions in the Contemporary Gallery.

Admission to Final Friday is free for museum members and U.Va. students, thanks to Arts$. A $3 admission fee is charged to nonmembers.

Free parking is available at Culbreth Road Garage and in the A6 parking lot, next to Madison Bowl on Rugby Road.

The U.Va. Art Museum is open to the public Tuesdays through Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free. For information, visit www.virginia.edu/artmuseum.
