October 27, 2010 — Tonight's 8 p.m. staging of "The Bog of Cats" in the University of Virginia's Helms Theatre will go on as scheduled, despite a minor fire this morning that damaged many of the show's props.
According to Steven Warner, a lecturer in the College of Arts & Science's Drama Department, the fire apparently started in a box containing props for the play. An electronic cigar shorted out, smoldered, then caught fire. Warner and a student put out the fire this morning with a fire extinguisher.
Students have been scurrying around town all day to replace the damaged props, Warner said.
Though the smell of smoke lingers, the building has been reopened and the show will go on, he said.
